April 2005
April 26th
  • Update: Thanks very much for the many emails people have sent in support for this site.  To answer your questions en masse, here's my status.  Nothing has changed :)  I'm not going to close the website or anything drastic like that, although updates are going to be a little slow since I'm going down to Texas to hang out with the producers of WWII Online.  The recent loss of all the naval data was a pain in the ass, but I'm gonna get back to updating again after I return from vacation.  Thanks again for all your support, and I'll do my best to respond to you all on an individual basis when I get the time!

April 17th

  • Note:  I guess someone has a grudge against me, because they decided to wipe out the entire database due to a security loop-hole.  Luckily I've kept a backup starting in the beginning of April, but this means that "Fleet Week" and anything else done in April was all for nothing.  The security loop-hole has been fixed, but to be honest the wind has been completely taken out of my sails.  Hundreds of hours of work has been for nothing, and I need a break.

April 14th

  • Note: It's been about a week since I updated the site, but for good reason!  After 3 days of intense database entry and tool design, I now have a new section of Tarrif.net for Navy Field!  The first tool, the Ship Builder, has been launched.  There's 3000+ lines of code, so contact me when you find errors.

April 7th

  • The warship database is now twice as big as it was at the beginning of the week with 50 entries.
  • Added the following units to the Warships database...

    R.N. Gorizia
    R.N. Pola

April 5th

  • Note:  I know many people have emailed me over the last few days about various things related to the website.  I've read your emails and will respond soon, but real life stuff combined with the goal of adding as many ships as possible means there will be delays in my ability to respond.  I will get to you soon.  Thanks very much for your contributions and patience.
  • Added the following units to the Warships database...
    I.J.N. Fubuki Class

    U.S.S. Fletcher

April 3rd

  • Note: Tomorow starts the beginning of "Fleet Week" - an attempt to jump start the lagging "Warship" section of the website.  Of all the databases, the warships have the least entries, and I intend to correct that.  If there's any types of ships you'd like to see, vote in the poll above.
  • Milestone: During the month of March Tarrif.net has averaged 400 unique visitors per day.  While I'm not a big fan of hit counters I do appreciate the sheer numbers of people who've visited this site.  I hope you found it useful!
  • Added the following units to the Warships database...

    K.M.S. Admiral Scheer
    K.M.S. Admiral Graf Spee

February 2005
February 28th
  • Note: I'm doing an audit of the aircraft database, very similar to the one done on the vehicle database.  From now on aircraft data will be more dynamic with a lot more fields, plus engine data will be pulled directly from the engine database.  This is going to take some time though, and the database might be a little quirky from time to time until I'm done.  Sorry for the inconvenience.
  • Update:  Only got about 10 of 167 aircraft done so far.  I'm using a triple-check method, which means every piece of conflicting data needs to be verified by at least 3 different credible sources.  This obviously takes time.  As an example of what the new aircraft display will look like...

February 27th

  • Check out Firing Squad, who were nice enough to directly link my site in a WWII Online review...

February 26th

  • Added the interview of Lothar Seifert, German schoolboy FlaK gunner, since it won the most votes of last month's poll.  You can find it in the Interview section. A new poll for a next months interview will be up shortly.

    FCM 1936

February 25th

  • Added a new Engines database and database tool to browse it.  You can find it in the Intelligence section.
  • Update: I've edited the tools for the Vehicle database so that they now draw engine and gunsight information directly from those two new databases.  Power to weight ratio will now be automatically calculated instead of hard coded.
  • These screenshots were released by CRS today!

February 24th

  • Added new picture files for the Sherman series of tanks.  Today I'll be adding pictures for the Lee/Grant, Stuart, Priest, Greyhound, and other American vehicles.  Hopefully adding some more variants along the way.

    Cruiser Tank Ram Mk.II
    Opel Blitz 3.6 36S

February 17th

  • No update today I don't think, at least for now.  My baby decided it would be a good idea to go to bed at 1:30 am, wake up at 2:10 am, then cry until 5 am.  That was nice timing, since I had to get up at 5:30 am to do some work.  At least I was able to keep my eyes open long enough to help capture Vlissengen.  If I have the strength, I'll add some units to the database tonight, but don't count on it.

February 16th

  • I'm in the process of collecting pictures, artwork, technical documents, screenshots, and color plates of all vehicles in the database - resizing and sorting them, then uploading them to my server.  This is going to take some time so no additions today or tomorrow.  If you have any of the above and would like to share, my email address is tarrif@hotmail.com  Thanks!

February 15th

  • Added a new feature to the vehicle database.  Now you have the choice to view either a color vehicle plate, blueprint, photograph, WWII Online screenshot, or artwork of each vehicle.  There are also links for movies and historical documents on that unit. (Example)  Pictures will be slowly added to the database, so it'll be a while before this project is complete, but I'll try to do the favorites first.

February 6th

  • I'm in the process of converting the Submarine database to the 3 column format.  Also, my girlfriend got me a book with over 150 color profiles of submarines of World War II, and I'll be adding quite a few of them as time permits.
  • Added a new header category for submarines.  Only the Germans and Italians have any subs in the database at this point, but more will come soon.
  • Cleared server cache.  Page load times might be slightly longer, but it's because of the dozens of new images I've uploaded over the last few days.
  • Got rid of the "Weapons" page and assimilated all of that data in the "Intelligence" section.

February 3rd

  • Added the 75mm Bofors 1934 artillery piece to the Artillery database.

February 2nd

  • Update: Finished the Vehicle database audit.  All data, to the best of my knowledge, is accurate now.  Anything that could not be corroborated by at least 2 sources is listed as "Unknown".  Almost all vehicles also have gunsight information about them.
  • Updated the Vehicle Comparison tool and Vehicle Database tool to display the new fields.
  • Added penetration data for Italian guns.  This data comes strait from the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, although the documentation is not for public distribution, which is extremely unfortunate.  I'm going to keep pressing for permission to display copies of the documents online.
January 2005
January 30th
  • Note: I've edited and validated information on 100 of the 157 tanks in the database.  In doing this, I've check and re-checked every single piece of data on every vehicle, using only the most reliable information, and backing that information up with reliable sources when possible.  A sources page will follow after the update, although in some circumstances I've actually gone to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds and taken my own measurements when I found insufficient data.  Hopefully this update will be done by Wednesday and I can go back to adding units to the database.

January 28th

  • Note: Over the next few days I'll be overhauling the Vehicle database.  I'm going to check every single bit of information against some very reliable information obtained from the NARA and Aberdeen Proving Grounds.  I'll also be adding fields for range, fuel consumption, and gunsight magnification and field of view.  This will take a few days, thus updates might not be so regular.
  • Put all the 2004 front page material in the archive.
  • Updated the Freighter, Fairmile B, and Destroyer User's Guides.

    PZL P.11 C
    PZL P.23 Karas B
    PZL P.24 F

January 23rd

  • Added 6 new countries as database options and to the header above.  Also added a spot for the U.S. Marine Corps.  I did this because the USMC had almost entirely different equipment and requirements than the U.S. forces fighting in Europe.  I don't know if it'll stay that way.  Because these countries usually didn't produced their own weapons, I've decided to sum up their arsenals in one easy page instead of breaking them down by services.  If I get enough information about a country to justify breaking things up into sub-categories, then I'll do so.

January 22nd

  • Finished conversion of the Aircraft Database.
  • Added the following units to the Infantry Weapons database today...
    Model 1895 Nagant

January 18th
